European Sporting Heritage: Stories, Values and Shared Traditions

Sport has long been an important part of Europe’s cultural landscape. From ancient athletic competitions and traditional games to modern international tournaments, sporting practices have shaped communities, identities and shared experiences across the continent.

These activities are not only about physical performance – they also reflect the social values, traditions and collective memories of the societies in which they developed.

Across Europe, sporting heritage can be found in many forms. It includes historic stadiums, Olympic venues and training grounds, but also archives, photographs, equipment and personal stories connected to athletes and communities. At the same time, sport heritage is also intangible: traditions, rituals and games passed down through generations that continue to bring people together. Traditional sports and games, for example, are often recognised as part of cultural heritage because they encourage social cooperation, intercultural dialogue and a shared understanding of local identities.

Over the past decades, museums, cultural institutions and research projects across Europe have increasingly focused on preserving and presenting these stories. Digital collections and online exhibitions now make it possible to explore historical sporting moments, iconic competitions and everyday sport practices that shaped European societies. Initiatives such as digital heritage platforms and collaborative projects have helped bring thousands of historical photographs, objects and archival materials related to sport into the public domain.

Exploring sporting heritage is not only about looking at the past. It also offers an opportunity to reflect on the values associated with sport - perseverance, teamwork, fairness and respect. By understanding the historical and cultural contexts in which sport evolved, new generations can discover how these values continue to influence communities across Europe today.

Within the My Sporting Heritage project, partners are currently developing educational games and a virtual gallery that will invite young audiences to discover stories from Europe’s rich sporting heritage through playful learning and interactive exploration.

My Sporting Heritage project is a part of Erasmus+ Sport and it relies on the expertise of European researchers (University of Amsterdam, European Cultural Route of Sport Association, Think Tank Sport & Citoyenneté) and specialists in digital pedagogy and the sport field (Musée National du Sport, Michael Culture and Radiona).
